American Nightmare

“American Dream”, was the phrase

That was the craze of my days

We all loved to chase

The “American Dream” craze

I tried to live that dream

Little did I know it was a pipe dream

The money I made was never enough

All I could do was huff and puff

Health care was like an affair,

All you are left with are tears in your eyes

The monthly rates are so high

That you could fly first class to Shanghai

Trying to learn in a college

Was just something you yearn for

The fees are so ridiculously high

That you would have to be the Sultan of Brunei

The interest rate were kept artificially low

The prices on the house were kept artificially high

I ended up owning a house,

On which I now owe more than it is worth

I keep putting money into Social Security

But, by the time I retire there is no surety

That I will get anything back

It was like putting money in a bottomless pit

Companies started to scheme

They began to team with countries offshore

To show us the door

All I could do was scream and roar

When Obama came, he reignited my dream

But the nightmare was just beginning to unfold

Companies began to stumble, jobs took a tumble

Politicians began to fumble and stumble

Like a ton of bricks, everything began to fall

The wall of deceit had begun to fall

Companies that I used to adore

Were lying dead on the floor

My “American Dream” is no more

All I had in store was an “American Nightmare”

And with no end in sight

My knuckles are turning white with fright
